In between pancake-making and explaining the differences of a circumcised penis vs. an uncircumcised penis, my son asked if he could get steel drumsticks and a cowbell, along with acoustic drums for his birthday.
I barely processed the drums and steel drumsticks part because as a person whose personality was molded by 90’s Saturday Night Live skits, all I heard was cowbell… cowbell… cowbell… ringing in my head (pun intended).
If you’re anything like me, I know that when you read the title of this blog post, you knew the end of that sentence.
If you’re anything like me, your brain can immediately conjure up Will Ferrell dancing around that studio whacking his cowbell with gusto, belly hanging out, tight perm on point. Christopher Walken (♥️) exclaiming, “I got a fever… and the only prescription is more cowbell!”
If you’re anything like me, not many things are funnier than cowbell in your opinion.
So I needed my kids to see it.
There are things I know they’ll never understand and won’t think are funny, so I don’t even bother.
With some things, there’s no bridge big enough to cover the generational gaps. But COWBELL? COWBELL is undeniably funny. I went into this with the confidence of Apollo Creed fighting The Russian.
Well we all know how that turned out.
My eldest laughed. I got a little grunt out of my youngest and he admitted that it was funny when Bruce Dickinson tells the band they’re going to be wearing a golden diaper, only for Chris Kattan to say, “What does that even mean??” But my middle… he sat there with actual contempt on his face and had the NERVE to ask me, “How long is this?”
I’m still in shock. Does he just hate me? Does he want to hurt me? Or do I need to bring him to a doctor to see if he was born without a funny bone? Maybe he’s sick in the head and … the only prescription is more cowbell!!
If you’ve never seen it, well first of all, I have a question: what’s it like living under a rock? Here it is. Let me know if he’s right and I’m wrong. Forget it, I know I’m not.
