Unf*ck Yourself

No, that brilliant title isn’t a product of my own imagination. It’s a book I listened to yesterday by Gary John Bishop, written in 2016.

It’s not your typical self-help book. Bishop makes it very clear that it’s the anti-self-help book.

Instead of trying to make you believe you’re wonderful and you deserve everything, it’s a big ol’ slap in the face telling you to get out of your own way.

It was a quick, 3.5 hour listen. I suggest getting the actual paperback; not just because he tells you to keep it, mark it up, and refer back to it in the future, but because Gary John Bishop is Scottish and he reads the audio book.

Don’t get me wrong. I love a Scottish accent. But after 3.5 hours of a Scot yelling at you to un-fuck yourself, it gets a little grating.

For me, except for a couple areas in my life, I was pleasantly surprised to hear that I’m on the right, un-fucked track.

If I had to sum the book up in a few sentences they would be:

– Think about what you really want and if you’re willing to put in the time and effort to get it.

– Stop making excuses, ALL excuses.

– Just do it.

What I liked about it, in particular, is that I was forced to examine what I “think” I want and ask myself:

“Do I really want these things? Or are they goals I told myself I should never give up on?”

If my answer was: “Yes! I do want these things!” – then I have to work for them. There’s just no other way.

But if I don’t really want those things, I have to let them go – which is extremely liberating.

If you don’t think your life is fucked, I still suggest giving this book a read, but if you do think your life is fucked, you MUST read it.

I warn you though – if you’re full of excuses and blaming others, you’re in for quite a wake-up call.

Embrace it and un-fuck your life!
