I bet you thought this was going to be another politically charged post, right? Sorry, it’s not.
But … it is about why I’m like this. You probably assume – especially if you know Teara too – that I come from a family with loudmouth parents. I do not. Well my Dad’s REALLY loud when he’s had a few, but not usually 🍸 🗣
In fact, even though my Mom (who we affectionately call Lol), is opinionated and strong, she’s not a gigantic loudmouth like me and Teara.
Every Thursday my parents come over for a social distancing cocktail hour on my front porch that they call, Drinks at Tiffany’s, a play on the movie title, Breakfast at Tiffany’s.
PJ and the boys call it Mommy Gets Drunk with Grandpa Thursdays, but they don’t mind because it’s also our official “get take out for dinner day” and they get to see Grandma & Grandpa.
Anyway, back to my sweet Lol. I wish she would turn into a loudmouth like me and Teara. Don’t get me wrong, she’s no wilting flower, and sometimes I do utter the phrase, “You said that?!”😳 But for the most part, she’s wayyyy too kind for her own good and there are a lot of people who take advantage of that kindness.
I always tell her that she should’ve told them to fuck off long ago but she never listens.
*Side note – she hates when I curse. Sorry Lol 😬😂
She’s not upset by me & Teara being the way we are though. She’s actually very proud of us. And when you know your parents are proud of you, it instills a confidence that can’t be replaced by anything else.
I jokingly said to her once, “You’re going to be so proud of me!” and in all seriousness she replied, “I’m always proud of you.”
That made me feel WONDERFUL and now when my own children ask, “Mommy, are you proud of me?” My go-to answer is, “I’m always proud of you.”
So the other day when Pa & I were having our drinky-poos and loudly conversing about racial injustice and abortion as Lol and PJ soberly sat there embarrassed by us; Lol made me feel good once again.
I wondered aloud if what I’d been writing lately was too much, and she said, “You’re just sticking up for people. You’re defending people who should be defended.”
So with that little nugget of pride in my pocket, I will continue to stand up for what I believe in and if you don’t like it, too bad. You can blame it on my Mommy.
*Fun Fact: The movie “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” is how I came up with the name for my blog. Holly Golightly is the main character in the movie so I mixed the 2 and there ya go.
